The role of the doula is never to take the place of the birth partner(s) in labor but rather to compliment and enhance their experience. Today more fathers/partners play an active role in the birth process than ever before. This doesn’t always mean they will know exactly how to carry out that role. It will look different for every family.

By having a doula as a part of the birth team, support persons are free to take part in whatever they choose. Doulas can encourage partners on how and when to use comfort techniques and the doula can step in if that support person needs a break. Having a doula allows the partner to support the laboring woman emotionally during labor and birth and to also enjoy the experience without the added pressure of trying to remember everything that was learned in childbirth class!
